I teach with a very casual approach. It's not a science or math class. ( I guess it actually is in all regards ). Different student have different needs. I believe in finding out a students wants. I had a younger student who wanted to Zeppelin on the Alto. "Okay" So I showed the student exactly what to do. He had no knowledge of music but I knew that if he enjoyed it, he'd keep playing and playing. Read More

I have used and am open to a variety of band and piano methods. Essential Elements is ne of the best band instrument books, and I like the Fabre piano student book series. I Introduce solo and ensemble rep as quickly as possible also along with familiar tunes the student requests.older students and adults are canvasses as to where there musical interests lie. I keep my instruction as engaging and fun as possible, no matter what age and level of expertise the students levels are at. Read More

I strive to get all of my students to understand not just how to play music, but how to learn how to play music-similar to the old adage "give a man a fish and he can eat today, but teach a man to fish and he can feed himself for the rest of his life". I use a open school-style philosophy of teaching, which revolves around exploration of the music (trial and error, in a sense), as well as encouraging the students to be self-reflective, self-critical, and to ask as many questions as they want to in order to understand each musical concept within the confines of his/her individual learning style. I have been instructing since I was 17. I have found that, as a performer, my craft only deepens as I develop as an education as well. I have been fulltime since college and have loved every minute. With my diverse background in multi styles I find that I bring a fresh and unique approach to music education. My primary goal is to bring together the technical element to grow in fundamentals, intermixed with fun! Read More

For beginning students, I like to focus for the first few weeks on playing scales and songs without written music, and I continue to incorporate learning by at any level. When I begin using written music I use the Accent on Achievement or Essential Elements method (I am also comfortable with other standard elementary methods and would be happy to use whatever method a student's band director is using), which is a good place to start whether or not the student already reads music. My main method is to be in the middle between having a discipline, encouraging to practice regularly, stay focused but at the same time to remain curious about the process and not let the students develop the habit where they need to practice because they need to. With some older students I try to be somewhat specific and explain what are the things we are working on, why we are working on this, and how to archive it. Read More

I use generally use Faber and Faber for piano and the Yamaha method for guitar. However, each student learns differently therefore I like to meet and assess the needs before choosing a course to follow. For band students, I use the school's chosen method of instruction supplementing with theory, technique and performance pieces. For piano students, I get to know each student's taste in music and choose accordingly. I encourage my voice students to learn a varied repertoire of classical, folk songs, Broadway and pop if they desire. Read More
