I develop a lesson plan and schedule that begins with the musical interests and passions of the student, their favorite bands, favorite songs and musical styles. From there I take each of their favorite pieces of music and demonstrate how the building blocks of music were used to create each, and how they can not only recreate their favorites, but start to create their own musical identity. I believe in getting the student interested in the concepts and styles themselves, i like to introduce them to different ways of playing and my main method is to show them how it can be exciting to play/learn. For eg, for someone who loves games, I would show them how to play chords and melody ( on a piano ) at the same time by using the Minecraft theme song as an example, or any game that they might know and enjoy so it gets them interested to want to play and learn, through that i will show them dfferent techniques and concepts, this way they are already enjoying what they are learning and at no point will not want to practice it on their own. My students see me repeatedly for years and they know that I only ask them to do their best, and they recognize when they fall short. I talk to my kids like adults, and they respond maturely. They are aware that I have my own drumming goals and that their progress is NOT the absolute most important thing on my list. This keeps them motivated. I also start students off with reading which helps them better understand rhythm and being able to read music is a huge plus in todays music world.
