I love seeing and hearing my students get something and play it well. It is more rewarding than any amount of money. I encourage my students to play and perform as much as possible even if it is just in their own home. I keep the lessons well paces but I am not afraid to go off in a different direction if it suits the student. Music should be inspiring and should leave the student always wanting to learn more. For beginners, I start off by teaching the proper technique needed to achieve basic expression on the drumset. For more advanced players, I will help you explore tonal and sonic capabilities beyond what you may have achieved already. I have a background in teaching in New York City public schools, and as such I am very experienced in creating a lesson plan for the student if it is deemed by me to be helpful. Read More

I have a teaching method that incorporates all the best bits of my best teacher's input, adds what they lacked, built in a sequence that is musically universal, using many popular drum study books and my own proven system of development. And with 30 years of live playing and recording experience, the CONTEXT of what we are learning and how to apply it musically is vital, rewarding, exciting and admittedly unique to my curriculum. I teach basic stick technique using George Lawrence Stone's Stick Control, and I have numerous hand exercises based on patterns from that book that I warm up with every lesson. Starting with snare drum and basic hand technique also will incorporate rhythm reading, and basic limb independence. When my students start behind the kit, they will start by applying some of those hand exercises to the drumset, and also learn how to orchestrate and play basic grooves. Read More

I draw attention to the importance of listening and help the student identify what to listen for. There is nothing more frustrating than practicing a particular fill 1000 times, only to later realize you've been practicing it incorrectly. This is very common among drummers young and old, but is easily dealt with by simply cultivating a sense of listening and apt imitation. However, I do not endorse perfectionism as a means of effective learning either, and I also will remind the student of the fact that sometimes when you're jamming, even if what what you're playing is not perfect, it's "good enough for rock and roll." This is part of the attitude of rock and roll that I feel is conducive to better, faster learning: a willingness to make mistakes, acknowledge them, learn from them, and move on. Read More

I started teaching drums back when I was in High School, in France. Since then, I have had the chance to teach students from all ages and background. I love to adapt the different goals that different people can have. As long as my students are willing to have fun and open their ears, everything is achievable. I really encourage students to find out which songs/genre they enjoy and make them play along with music to recreate a live band playing experience. Read More
