I love to have fun in my lessons. No single student understands the same thing the same way so I take the time to listen/understand them as a person and as a musician. While it would be wonderful if all of my students became virtuosi musicians, I understand that sometimes math class may be at the forefront of their attention. That said, practice is still required. Like a doctor, I prescribe solutions to students to help them achieve their goals and will do everything I can to help them to succeed but if they dont take the remedy, success is can be quite slow. Teaching has been my profession since before my college days, when I begun by teaching guitar lessons to classmates. Since college, it has been my primary occupation. I lead by example as a musician, and I encourage regular quality practice and cultivate an attitude of discipline and a drive to greatness. A cross-discipline in music is my primary approach to teaching, and I make a point of educating my students in how to communicate with other musicians. Read More

I actually taught me first guitar lesson around senior year of high school, as I had already been playing guitar for about 5 years by that point and had garnered a small reputation as a skilled musician. I continued into college, taking on piano students focusing on theoretical analysis and fundamentals. After college I continued freelance teaching and have had many students succeed in creating and working in their own way. Read More

If the student relates to the material, everything will come much easier. I usually begin with music the student likes, and often use that same piece to pivot into learning drum notation. Once the student grasps the concept behind rhythmic notation and subdivision, presenting them with additional, more complex material is simple and becomes increasingly more rewarding! For younger students presenting them with drum notation as simple number counts and times where 2 or more instruments play simultaneously has worked wonderfully in my experience. Read More

I think focusing on the basics is very important, but I think it is equally important to engage the student. I always want to know what type of music the student is interested in so they can learn how to play it. Combining basics plus their own interests is something that is very important for me. I also think reading music and teaching out of books is very important. Although it can be a bit annoying to read and do all these exercises. Read More

Every drum student receives personalized drum lessons designed to motivate, excite, challenge, and move the drum student at a steady and comfortable pace. No drum lesson is complete until the student has a full understanding of the concepts discussed and exercises assigned. Whether the student is a beginner, intermediate, advanced I will tailor the drum lessons to meet the student's goals and aspirations. Some student may want to learn rock beats to jam with their friends or to ultimately play professionally as a drummer, I can help show the way. Read More

For beginning students I start with an Alfred's beginning drum method to help with reading. We also start on the basic understanding of musical concepts such as tempo, dynamics and so on. While reading is important I do also include learning by wrote or by ear. A good ear is just as important as good reading skills for the complete musician. I always include music that the student is interested in to keep the lessons fun and engaging! Read More
