My methods vary from student to student. Everyone learns differently. Although i recommend learning how to read music, it is not required and there have been plenty of great drummers that do not read. A normal lesson consists of covering all aspects of learning an instrument. As not all students will have the desire to become professional musicians, the ultimate goal is to build lifelong lovers of the arts...and if the student decides that music is a career, then the lessons are geared accordingly.
