I have been teaching for five years and how I teach is definitely influenced by experiences. I have had the opportunity to study with musicians in all occupations and styles. This is why I am so grateful to be able to find what inspires each student of mine and help them grow in whatever style gets them playing. Read More

I have had a lifelong passion for music as far back as I can ever remember. I was exposed to a wide variety of different musical genres from a very young age, and developed an interest in percussion when I was 3 years old. Drumset is my main instrument, but I am also proficient in classical percussion, marching percussion, and mallets. in 2005, I studied at the BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset, and in 2009 Ireceived a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Performance from SUNY New Paltz.Iwas a member of my High School Stage Band, Jazz Band, and was section leader/head snare drummer of the Commack High School Marching Band. I focus on nurturing a students natural curiosity, while helping them find the tools to pursue their own musical interests. Many of my younger students prefer to use technology to connect with music (learning how songs are recorded, and the theory behind songwriting), but I also work with more serious students to prepare for college auditions, state/regional jazz band, etc. My methods differ depending on a student's own goals, but they generally all will start with a technical exercise, an exercise designed to get the student thinking critically, and an application of the concepts we're learning. When it comes to teaching music, the student is the first priority. If the student is interested in playing rock music, we will focus on that. If they want to focus on the music they play in school band, we will focus on orchestral and symphonic percussion. Every student is different, and it is a teachers job to tailor the lessons towards a students natural learning style. I make sure to acknowledge my student's accomplishments, give extra attention to areas they need to work on, and generally make sure that they are always learning and having fun. Read More

Because everyone learns differently, I teach from a technique I've developed which I refer to as the blank slate method. Though I do utilize workbooks for their very informative and easy to understand nature, I prefer to teach each student based on what they know or what comes naturally to them. This involves you the student, your instrument, and a pen and paper. For beginner students who are children, we work together to learn a simple song so that they can feel a sense of accomplishment and be further motivated to continue their studies. Read More

The most rewarding thing that happens in the development of musical skills and a teaching relationship, is when a student develops a love of music and their instrument of choice. In my years of experience, I come to the understanding that each student is different and their progress depends on themselves. As a result, I always encourage my students to set goals for themselves that are realistic, but that will also challenge them in a productive manner. Read More

For young students, I would usually start them off using Bastien Piano Basics. It's very digestible, and gives a good starting-off point for both technical playing, and larger musical concepts as a whole. With a student who is older or perhaps more advanced, who has a solid grasp on technical proficiency and music theory, I would typically recommend studying specific pieces, starting with Classical, and eventually moving into Jazz. I feel that following a chronological study of music is one of the best ways to become a well-rounded, versatile player who feels comfortable approaching any material. Read More
