For piano students, I prefer Alfred's methods, whether the adult or for beginners. For band and orchestra, I use Essential Elements (or whatever their school is using), and supplement with Rubank's methods. For voice, I concentrate on whatever the student is interested in, with a foundation of good technique and understanding of the voice range and how to control it, with some solfege and sight-singing mixed in. I would teach students to play by ear since that is what I know. I believe in showing somebody how to make that beat is best. Once you get that down, then I can show the student something a little harder. I went on to play bass guitar at a professional level in bar bands and on cruise ships, and piano and organ at a professional level in churches.
