For beginner students on drums I use Ted Reed's Syncopation and Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone. These books provide a great foundation for every drummer and once we put together a great foundation our potential greatly increases. I also assign a great deal of listening for my students from all areas of music. For more advanced students we do use Syncopation and Stick Control as well but there are a number of other great resources such as The New Breed by Gary Chester or Creative Coordination by Keith Copeland. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. He joined the school band and performed drum solos for entertainment at school events. Soon it became evident that being a drummer was his calling. I was born and raised in Brazil (Recife) which I have a very good knowledge about all the folkloric rhythms from Brazil. Once I started lessons on the upright bass, originally with the intention of only playing jazz, I soon fell in love with classical bass playing, and this became my primary focus during college. My major teachers have included Lynn Fleming, Jeff Weisner of the National Symphony Orchestra, and Laura Ruas of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra.
