That being said, sometimes learning songs (covers) can be the best way to learn quickly and it can be a lot of fun. Something I've done many times too is writing precise exercises for students in order to address and target specific needs. I like to develop a plan to get each student to a level of proficiency in which they can direct themselves toward the next goal.
