Everyone is different. Some students learn faster by using their ears and some by reading. Both of these skills are clearly important but one will always be weaker. This is where knowing your student and what they're trying to achieve is important. Some students want to learn a simple drumbeat, some want to learn a specific song. I have two goals in my lessons. One: What does the student want to learn? Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with the basic fundamentals of the instrument, focussing on right posture, grip and sound. For intermediate students there is more freedom. If there is a good understanding of how the fundamentals work, the student can share her / his preference with me. Since I teach all genres, there is a very broad palette to discuss. Whenever I have a good feeling with the student's preference, I'll come up with a system so we can start working on new material. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with the method book that the child is given by the school Music teacher, making certain that they are at least adequately prepared to play their assigned studies (or pages) for their school Music lesson. I also incorporate playing the Duets provided in that volume, along with the students. I then suggest that they purchase other necessary methods, duets and solos at their local Music Store(s), as they progress, and they will therefore require more advanced Musical materials than that used at their school. I love to see how much all of my students improve and overcome their "blocks" on the drums. I usually make a little recording of the new student on day 1 and then make them listen to it after a few lessons: It always surprises them to see how far they've gone! Those little accomplishments are a great motivation for my students to "keep at it" and continue progressing and growing as musicians. Read More

I enjoy teaching students my craft in percussion whether it is drumset, world or classical genres. I have both experience in Orff and Kodaly methodology. I teach students to listen to each other and to learn and know the music that they play so that they are not playing just notes. They make the music, so what they play is there's to share. Playing the instruments require knowing the instrument that is being played and while they do this, they learn how to sing, and write the music and identify what styles and genres the music is intended. I started teaching music lessons back when I was 14, when friends would ask for tips or lessons, and local parents wanted lessons for their children. I fell in love with the act of helping others to realize the music inside them, and have been teaching consistently ever since. Learning any musical instrument involves learning about oneself. The student and teacher must work together to define their goals, be comfortable confronting shortcomings, discover how they learn best, and find the patience and drive to practice for long enough to get better.
