My teaching style is heavily student focused: By listening to my student's voice and choice, I want to work together to create musical goals for them that we can develop as we progress. While I believe in creating a learning environment focused on intrinsic motivation, I hope my positive attitude and love for music can serve as a source of inspiration for my students! The most important aspect of any lesson is the joy that we bring to it, which is crucial to us developing musical skills and beautiful music. Read More

I custom tailor my lessons to each individual student so that they are inspired and equipped to develop both their love and ability for playing. Balancing this with the proper techniques, understanding and exercises affords the opportunity to assimilate the material on a practical, useful playing level. The Joy that the student experiences in their playing as they develop gets transferred to the listening audience and is a very rewarding experience! Read More

I started teaching kids in my neighborhood when I was 14, even though I had only been playing for a year! I kept it up thru highschool, teaching privately as well as being captain for the drumline, where I ran rehearsals and acted as liaison between staff and students. Since moving to New York in 2012 I have kept a consistent private studio. I emphasize making the instrument fun and a positive experience. Read More

My two favorite books for all my beginning drum students are George Lawrence Stone's Stick Control and Ted Reeds Syncopation. These books, and the rudiments are a great place to develop the basics of the instrument. After learning the foundations, I develop an individual program to meet the students needs and desires, making the instruction both educational and fun. I learn from them what techniques, styles, and other drummers interest them, and tailor the lesson towards helping them learn the skills that will keep them interested. Read More

I've taught in a myriad of environments. My earliest goes back to instructing marching band/indoor percussion programs. My most recent marching program was Fusion Drum Bugle Corps. My college studies helped me branch out musically, and thus I started dabbling in private instruction which I found very fulfilling. I was a graduate adjunct instructor at NYU, teaching primarily concert snare drum. Nowadays, I teach at private music studios (a la School of Rock) and am building up a studio of my own! Read More

For young students, I would usually start them off using Bastien Piano Basics. It's very digestible, and gives a good starting-off point for both technical playing, and larger musical concepts as a whole. With a student who is older or perhaps more advanced, who has a solid grasp on technical proficiency and music theory, I would typically recommend studying specific pieces, starting with Classical, and eventually moving into Jazz. I feel that following a chronological study of music is one of the best ways to become a well-rounded, versatile player who feels comfortable approaching any material. Read More

For beginning students, I ususaly start with the first level of method books unless they have other music instrument experience that is relevant. Fundamentals will be introdruced in an appropriate order while simultaniously adding in bit by bit songs and etudes that will push the student to realize all the techniques they are learning.
