I have played the drums for 25 years and have been teaching for 15 (as an instrumental teacher and a classroom music teacher). It is not necessary to own a drum set for 3-4 months, in which time students practice at home on couches or beds where pillows represent the different parts of the drum set. I can offer advice when it comes to equipment purchases.
