Since my first student I taught in 2004, through the days I taught at a music school, up right on to the present moment, I love passing the music onward as it was passed to me. I use a variety of methods for my teaching style. I usually have a few method books that I bring to a first lesson, and after meeting the student I will decide on the best one. Once the student has progressed and shows some motivation to be slightly challenged, I'll introduce "popular" music so that the student feels a sense of accomplishment! When playing the actual drums, we focus heavily on rudimentary understanding of technique, grip, posture and fluidity while playing I have all students work on their 40 standard rudiments, understanding their history, application in both prior and contemporary forms of music, and how to further apply them. The rudiments are like the drummer's scale and are the consistent and perpetual language to speak drums.
