When teaching drums or percussion to a beginner, I always start with basic stick-control and technique. I have numerous methods for progression but after some time, I always let the student's interests and goals lead the way. I have multiple snare drum/drum set method books that range from elementary to advanced skills to achieve growth. I'm also a firm believer in being able to play by ear (and reading). Read More

I am a motivated instructor and performer who teaches and plays for the love of music. My primary instruments are drum set and vibraphone, but I teach and perform on a plethora of percussion instruments and some piano. I am currently completing my final year of my masters program in jazz performance from North Carolina Central University. I have had the honor of studying jazz and Italian in Italy for three months. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar Method as well as learning their favorite songs. For adults, I find out what the students are interested in, and guide my instruction accordinly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter they are beginners, songwriters, blues, jazz, classical, pop, funk, rock, fusion lovers or advanced players. My teaching style is adaptive to each individual student's strenghts and weaknesses. I create lesson plans based off of skill level and learning type.Everyone learns at their own pace, and I make sure to cater to those individual needs.I am an educator who strongly believes in the power of music education, and how it relates to other aspects of life. I believe a fun environment is the first step in education, and through the proper balance of hard work and fun the students goals will be met. Read More

I create my own lesson plans (and some materials) specific to each student. Some standard books I use are Alfred's Drum Method book 1, The New Breed, Portraits in Rhythm, The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary to name a few. The books are necessary for developing music literacy, however I remind students that the pages don't make sound!!! Developing a discerning ear is paramount in my approach. Therefore we do a lot of listening and I engage students in dialogue for them to develop a personalized mental image of what they are trying to play. Read More

As far as my teaching style is concerned, I strongly believe in teaching one "how to fish," as opposed to just letting them eat for a day. I purposely introduce material and techniques that are outside of the student's playing ability early on, so as to push them exponentially past whatever they originally "thought" they could do. To some, this pedagogical approach may seem a little extreme, but in my 10+ years of teaching, I've found that every student that has decided to stick with this style has found themselves playing some of the very styles and techniques that they never thought possible before.
