I believe the proper technique is essential in order to be a successful percussionist. We would start by how to hold the stick properly, whether it be matched grip or traditional grip. From there we would move on to how to properly hit the drum and bounce the stick. There are many different ways to teach. Som of my methods are as follows. 1- Freestyle. Feeling a certain rythm and figuring out how and what to play as far as that genre goes. 2- Feel. Understanding the undertone of music and how it should be felt by a listener or an audience. 3- Placement. This is the art of putting different little embelishments, in music, and in songs. My path as an educator began during my time studying history and philosphy in New Orleans, LA. I was playing live music almost six nights a week, and started helping out as an assistent at Tipitina's Sunday Workshop for young musicians. There I helped and watched the great Johnny Vidacovich teach young aspiring musicians the art of playing in an ensemble. I teach students how to play, as well as, read music.  I teach a variety of techniques and styles of music using books and making up lessons for my students.  I teach my students at any age how to play the set, along with snare drum techniques, and play with songs.
