My first job out of college was teaching at a charter school where I saw all the students in the school for 9 week periods. We established an after school band where private lessons were the main form of growth. In my next job, I taught students from beginning, in sixth grade, through their senior year of high school. I tailor a student's curriculum to their musical goals and needs, while making sure that I am instilling the fundamentals needed for pursuing music at the college scholarship level. Often this means scales, chords, arpeggios, music literacy, performance practice and listening skills. To accomplish this, I use standard materials that are often available online and are used by college and University music programs around the world. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching friends and kids at church 12 years ago. I have been teaching students off and on in my home or at church for the last 4 years. I encourage students to make time for regular practice on a consistent schedule. Another one of my key points I like to emphasize for younger students and adults is less is more as it tends to help the students progress and gain a passion for the instrument in its most simplistic form.
