I am a dedicated and motivational instructor who loves working with students interested in the American tradition of playing the drum set and the many styles of music it is applied to. While receiving my Bachelor's of science in Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University I took instruction from the Jazz faculty and became passionate in how to effectively manage cognition in the physical motions necessary to play the drums. I like to keep my students active by encouraging practice, showing them the results of practicing and exploring different types of styles. Should they want to perform, I like helping and preparing them for band auditions, big performances or their first band practice. I've taught students as young as 7 years old and as old as 63. Teaching students also helps me to become a better musician. Sometimes a student can teach me something about myself either as a teacher, drummer or even as a person. At the age of 29, I'm blessed to say I have been playing for over 25 years. 10 of those years has been professionally. I've had the luxury of playing alongside some of the best musicians in the world, many who are internationally renown. As far as books go, I prefer the Hal Leonard method, especially for beginner musicians. I combine visual, audio and kinesthetic learning methods to tailor to anyone's needs. Prior to studying at Peabody I toured professionally with various jazz ensembles, including competing for first place wins at the Reno (Nevada) Jazz festival for two years. At Peabody I studied with Fernando Laires and later, Robert Weirich where I excelled in contemporary music and difficult avant guarde performance ensembles. I was also a frequent guest performer for the Peabody Camerata Ensemble under director Gene Young. In the mid 90s I created the Bachelor of Music curriculum for the Maryland Bible College. Read More
