I find that I am at my happiest when I am instructing people in one of my greatest loves, music. In 2018, I graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of the Arts in Music, my emphasis being the saxophone. I have performed with numerous ensembles and one of the greatest rewards I get from playing is seeing the joy that it brings to others. During my four years at Ohio, I was able to play with the community symphony and it was there that I was able to see what music does for people in bringing them together and creating a strong sense of community, understanding, and joy. For classical studies, there are some standard saxophone repertoire books I like to go to. For brand new students, I use Essential Elements books, for intermediate students I use Rubank method books, and for advanced students I use the Ferling etude book. For jazz studies, I begin students with Lenny Neihaus' Jazz Conception for Saxophone, which lays a great foundation for jazz and swing playing. I’m a performer as well as a teacher. I’ve been on tour with operas, and I have led choirs and instrumental ensembles. I’ve been teaching private lessons for 30 years, since I was in college. I’ve worked as a professional singer and instrumentalist since high school. My experience has focused on classical repertoire. I’ve had the pleasure of teaching students from infancy to older adults. In the first lesson, I find out what my students' goals and interests are, whether it be learning music for fun, working toward a performance, brushing up on technique, etc. Once we have established a clear goal, I work together with my students to devise a plan for achieving said goal. For example, if a student wants to take voice lessons for fun, we start each lesson with several different vocal exercises for warming up the voice and exploring technique. Read More

I currently start teaching piano from the Faber method books, as they encourage the students move around the piano using different fingerings. We play flash card games, and sometimes use music apps to help learn the notes on the staff, while playing clapping ryhythm games most lessons. I also teach from the alfred method books as well as the alfred adult series. Congregational hymnplaying is taught using the students' own church hymnal, encouraging the student to start playing in church through preludes, eventually leading into playing for the congregation as ready.
