I began teaching private flute lessons when I was in high school to younger students in the Amityville school district, Amityville, NY. Once I began student teaching on Long Island, I began building a small studio of flute students. I then moved to NYC where I taught in the NYC public school system for 9 years teaching 6-12 grade. In that time, I started the music program at my school where I built 5 choruses, an orchestra, recorder class, a Broadway appreciation class, a step team and completed numerous other tasks. Improvisation and expression are key points I like to emphasize in all my students, as anyone can sit down and practice scales until their fingers fall off, but being able to express yourself through a musical instrument takes dedicated work and direction. For beginning students, I typically use one method book and one book of simple melodies.  My preferred method book is the Rubank series. The method book teaches the basics, while the melodies and songs keep things fresh and interesting for the student so they want to continue.  For advanced students, I find significant, staple pieces that any advanced musician should have in their repertoire.  This keeps the student engaged, and prepares them for anything down the road in their musical careers.
