For Beginners, I focus on music theory and the most important steps of caring for your flute. Then we branch into tone, technique, and rhythm. For my intermediate students, we start by using Taffanel and Gaubert Grand Exercises for technique. I also require my students to have Trevor Wye books for tone and technique. These will be a staple in the practice room and throughout your studies with the flute. Read More

Standing on stage with great musicians is the most effective way to learn music. That’s because music is an aural tradition, meaning music is taught by ear, often thru singing. Just like language. How did you learn to speak English? Not by reading books, but by jamming with words and speaking with masters of the language. Jamming (with notes or words) is the act of exchanging ideas with another person, a conversation. Read More

My teaching experience began in Webster, South Dakota as their high school band director for 11 years. I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years. Then I was fortunate to teach my last 11 years in beautiful southern California where I taught instrumental music at elementary to high school levels. Read More

At the start of the lesson, I will emphasize tone and air control which I've found makes a huge difference as a warm up. The primary books I will work out of are Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As students progress and I feel that they have a handle on the basics, I will slowly start to incorporate other repertoire that will be exciting to play and perform. Also, it's never too early to start teaching scales and having students memorize them which will greatly help and improve their technical ability. Read More

First thing's first: 1) WHAT are you listening to, lately? 2) WHY are you interested in learning music? 3) WHERE do you hope music will take you? This helps me to find out what my student's interests are, and where their passion is. Two beginners of the same age learning the same instrument, for instance, can have vastly goals, interests, and areas of strength. For beginners: scales, simple melodic pieces, and a very basic overview of notation, key, and time. Read More

I ask all of my students to be prepared for their lessons with a notebook and pencil for lesson notes and assignments. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. I believe in writing down notes that help students understand what they are learning, exactly what students should practice, and setting goals for their practice and overall progress. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student develop a passion for music; a student who practices and looks forward to coming to music lessons is a joy to teach. Each student must progress at his or her own pace; therefore realistic goals must be set at each lesson. Rewarding students for reaching practice goals makes students eager to learn more, and seeing how far they have progressed makes student's proud of their accomplishments. Read More
