My teaching experience began in college when I tutored other music majors in music theory. I then went in to become a Choral teacher for grades 6-12. I taught privately for the past 25 years, teaching those grade levels and then began teaching senior citizens almost 10 years ago. Im currently a worship director for a church in the Leesburg area where I work with people of all ages. Ive played and sung in a band since I was in high school and I love teaching several different styles and techniques. Read More

I have enjoyed a long and successful career in music and music education. I have performed at over 2000 events, taught students of all ages along the way, and also have taught flute and music theory at the college level. I am semi-retired now, and enjoy playing first flute in a symphonic wind ensemble, playing wedding ceremonies with a harpist, pianist, or acoustic guitarist, as well playing in a jazz quartet. I am not a teacher who uses specific method books. I use books based on the student's musical preferences or sometimes none at all. A good technique is always emphasized. My area of expertise is Sight Reading. This is an essential aspect of learning to play any instrument. A good sight reader is always able to learn their pieces faster and be better performers. A typical 'first lessons' for beginners is the exploration of the instrument, its tonal qualities, how the instrument works, and the creation of their own music on the instrument. Read More

My approach to teaching varies with the age level of each student. With younger students, imitation is often one of the best methods of learning and I prefer the Suzuki method for students up to age 8, especially with strings. For older children and adults, learning music notation and basic music theory for a full understanding of musical language are more important to get them to the level where they can learn any music that they want to play for fun. For beginning students, I like to start from Essential elements, Suzuki 1, or Piano Adventures. Students will also likely have a theory workbook or worksheets that match the level of their current repertoire. Intermediate students, we will start using a program called smart music that plays the accompaniment for pieces that we are working on. This will really help develop a great internal sense of rhythm and help students recognize immediately when something needs correcting. Read More

At the very beginning level I would start with fundamentals from whatever book I feel would be best for the student depending on their age and knowledge. Beforehand I definitely will need to asses their knowledge so I can do so accordingly. I however will now focus on solely fundamentals and will try to include in songs that the student would like to learn as long as it is in the bounds of reality, the lessons I provide are only part of the equation and the real work is what is put in after the lesson. I began teaching as a college student. Many of my peers looked up to me and I helped them along their musical path. I further assisted them on their instrument technique, and assisted in learning new styles like jazz music. During my masters tenure, I was a graduate assistant and taught many students and led ensembles to great student achievement. I also was a middle school band director for a brief period. Read More
