I began teaching as a student at OSU, then started teaching shortly after moving to California. I have been fortunate to have experience teaching students both individually and in group settings. My private students have been of all ages and different levels. One commonality I have found between students in these different settings is that they all have different goals and things that motivate them. With this in mind, I try to provide lessons that meet the individual needs of the student, while also keeping them engaged. Read More

I tailor my instruction to the students wants, needs and abilities. It's a creative environment every week and I make it fun and rewarding. We set goals for each week and I review what they want to learn on a regular basis. It has to be fun! When they are having fun they learn more, it's easier and they want to continue. Read More

I love to see my students get excited about music! I try to ignite the flame and get them to develop an interest of their own. Music should be a fun and positive part of our lives. While it's important to have fun, I also make sure students are gaining a solid foundation in the technical facility of the instrument. The sooner we can navigate the instrument without limitations, the sooner we can focus on the music itself! I like to incorporate duets, popular music, ear training, notation, and spontaneity in lessons. Read More

I believe every mind and thus every student is different. So especially when teaching something inherently creative like music, I almost always have to be inventive with my pedagogy. Every student has their own interests, learning style, and goals, and as an educator, listening to and really HEARING those is just step 1. Step 2, 3, etc. is to "creatively" construct a curriculum that fits that student; creativity is a requirement. To use specific example to highlight my teaching style, I worked with a boy named Adam from the time he was 9 through about 13. Read More

YEARS 4-6: EARLY INTERMEDIATE LEVEL This is when students start to flourish! Students have a solid skill set that includes literacy, technique, improvising, composing, and performing. They have 20+ performance experiences under their belts around this time! More student input is encouraged during this time and requests are encouraged. Read More

The first few lessons will focus on discovering our goals as one team: student, teacher and parents. We will have an open conversation about specific aspects of the flute and music that each student would like to improve as well as identifying their strengths. I use a variety of teaching methods, based on my own experience as a performer that I gained throughout long years of international education. I usually start my beginner students with Flute 101 Mastering the Basics method book, followed with the selection of scales and technical exercises of my creation and a repertoire selection (including etudes) matching the skills progression. It is important for me that the student is motivated and enjoys the lesson since they have to keep loving playing and practicing at home everyday to be able to progress properly. Learning music as learning anything is about exploration and repetition. Once you understand something you have to be able to do it correctly a few times before moving on. This can only be achieved if there is a certain amount of practicing involved. Read More
