The first thing a teacher must do is figure out how to motivate a student to practice. This can be done differently for different students. I have gained a passion for teaching from the people that taught and inspired me. I have worked with high school students and middle school students and find it rewarding to see them grow and progress into better musicians. I have enjoyed finding ways to keep my students motivated and wanting to come back and pursue their talent that they can spread with the world. I taught classical flute and recorder in the Austrian school system and music schools for 15 years. Later, I was the band director and music teacher for the grades 4-12 grades in the Syracuse City Schools. I conducted a concert band, jazz band and had over 70 students in my band programs. It is not necessary, however, to learn chords or grooves specifically from a book for these instruments. Depending on the desired style, there may not be much use of notated music, guitar tabliture, etc. But as already stated, this does not excuse a good foundation in reading music and understanding music theory. For more advanced players (who would most likely be percussionists if working with me, though I am willing to work with any instrument at a more advanced level), we would work out of books I and the student(s) find fitting for their skill level. For beginning children, I typically like to use the Alfred series of beginner books depending on the instrument. I also like the students to rely on their ears just as equally, so the other half of the lesson is usually dedicated to learning music without relying on reading music. Of course, this is all dependent on the student's needs or prior experience.
