I have taught brand new musicians, who have never opened their instrument case, all the way through high school levels. I believe in starting the young musicians right with a good sound. My teaching style is enthusiastic. I always show my students support, even if they are feeling discouraged. If there is a problem one my face in their individual practice, I am diligent in problem solving in our lesson. I work with my students to find small scale goals to work towards, and when they reach them, we find a new goal together. My teaching style is to identify what area a student needs help in and to remediate the problem by creating supplemental materials. Showing students what to practice and how to practice are key elements. My methods are geared to improve tone production, articulation, phrasing and musicality. I strongly recommend that students select classical music to practice. I heavily emphasize the playing of scales and arpeggios. I began teaching in 2012 when I was awarded the Graduate Assistant position at Western Michigan University. As a G.A., I was responsible for teaching non-music majors saxophone lessons, theory and ear-training, as well as coaching ensembles. I also taught flute and clarinet at Paramount Charter Academy in Kalamazoo, Michigan to middle school students.
