I began teaching lessons privately in high school, about 6 years ago, and throughout college consistently. I have taught brand new musicians, who have never opened their instrument case, all the way through high school levels. I believe in starting the young musicians right with a good sound. Together we will work on basic technique on each instrument, which will then assist them in learning music for band, their school ensembles or just personal knowledge and growth. Read More

I am demanding in terms of focus and dedication. There is pride shared when a student is successful. I don't measure success based on how many auditions or competitions someone has won, but a smile after completing a difficult task, a concept that finally hits home, or the enjoyment a student has when they can experience their improvements are the successes I strive toward. These are things a student and a teacher can control. Read More

I also made connections when relevant to our school-wide Words of the Week and K.I.N.D. Kids Program. It allowed me to team teach and model this instructional practice with teachers. Somewhere in the middle of this reading odyssey I became introduced to what is known as the Proficient Reader Research. I read and studied Mosaic of Thought by Ellin Keene and Susan Zimmermann as well as other advocates of this applied research such as Miller, Harvey and Goudvis, and counterparts in best practices in writing instruction such as Ruth Culham. My teaching style is enthusiastic. I always show my students support, even if they are feeling discouraged. If there is a problem one my face in their individual practice, I am diligent in problem solving in our lesson. I work with my students to find small scale goals to work towards, and when they reach them, we find a new goal together. Whether it is playing a chromatic scale, learning vibrato, or a tricky run in a piece, I acknowledge and celebrate for them. Read More

I have been teaching music since I was a young high school student. Over the years, I have crafted a unique and open method to teaching music that makes students feel engaged with their practice. I started my journey in middle school on the saxophone, taking my studies to the esteemed William Paterson University in New Jersey. Over my years of study there and in New York, I connected with other instruments I played such as the flute, piano, and guitar, and taught each of them along the way. Read More

My teaching style is to identify what area a student needs help in and to remediate the problem by creating supplemental materials. Showing students what to practice and how to practice are key elements. My methods are geared to improve tone production, articulation, phrasing and musicality. I strongly recommend that students select classical music to practice. I heavily emphasize the playing of scales and arpeggios. The composers that are the best to study include Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms. Read More

I began teaching in 2012 when I was awarded the Graduate Assistant position at Western Michigan University. As a G.A., I was responsible for teaching non-music majors saxophone lessons, theory and ear-training, as well as coaching ensembles. I also taught flute and clarinet at Paramount Charter Academy in Kalamazoo, Michigan to middle school students. It was a very rewarding experience to teach people of various ages, ability levels, and goals, and allowed me to refine my teaching methods based on the needs of each student. I currently teach music theory, piano, saxophone, clarinet, flute, drums, and composition at Belle Arti Center for the Performing Arts in Queens, NY. Read More
