Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet
For young beginners on wind instruments, I really focus on getting a good sound out of the instrument first. Then, I have them learn simple songs by ear to strengthen their relationship with the instrument. At the same time, I will teach them how to read music if necessary. I like to use the Rubank or the Sound Innovations band method books to start with. For my piano students, I go over posture and hand position first, in addition to the basics of the keyboard and fingerings for scales. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet
A Berklee College of Music Alumni, Simon has studied with an array of professors including Dino Govoni, Dennis Montgomery, Walter Beasley and Kenwood Dennard. His aggressive funky style has made him a mainstay in groups like the Brian Rigby Band and SlackTide both of which tour regularly up and down the east coast. In addition to these groups Simon has worked with groups such as SoulPax, and Jon Oneal and the Bayou Boys. Read More
Instruments: Flute
For beginners and younger students, I typically start with the Trevor Wye Beginner Method books or the Flute Student method book by Douglas Steensland. More intermediate students I will start out with the Rubank Method books. All of these books are tailored towards flute specifically, and have fairly comprehensive and progressive exercises that are very effective. I like to start out with a method book, and I can supplement with other materials to bet fit the needs of the student. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet Recorder
For beginning young students I prefer the Rubank Elementary Method for saxophone, clarinet and flute, and my own (unpublished) method for recorder. For older beginners, there are many books on the market. I'll work with what the student perfers. For more advanced students there are classic works such as Klose for clarinet or saxophone, solo works for competition or performance, or just for fun. I want recorder students to learn the 2 basic sets of fingering, since ensemble playing usually requires changing instruments. Read More
Instruments: Piano Flute Recorder Piccolo
I began teaching while in college and have now been teaching for 11 years. My students have ranged in age from 3-60. Since getting my Suzuki Flute certification in 2008, I have found the Suzuki method a great way to start young beginners. In addition to giving private lessons, I taught group flute classes for 3 years with the Harmony Program My students are encouraged to participate in ensembles, competitions and recitals as having such goals is a great motivation for practice and musical growth. I truly enjoy watching my students develop a deep and important love for music. I believe the way to facilitate that is to really get to know your students. Some students benefit from organization while others do better with a more relaxed approach. I take the time to understand what each individual needs and I reflect on what I can do to meet them where they are. My lessons come with structure AND flexibility. Read More
Instruments: Flute Piccolo
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my students progress throughout lessons, and to see them get as excited about it as I do! I tailor lessons to each individual student by focusing on the areas of which they would like to improve. I help students achieve their goals by giving them specific assignments for the following lesson. While working on these goals, I keep things light by using analogies that reference daily life, and are sometimes comical. Read More
