I began teaching when I was in High School, where I had several students of varying ages and skill levels.  I taught private lessons in their homes.  I encourage regular practice, and weekly lessons.  A mixture of method books and my own personal written lessons I have found to be the most effective teaching strategy. Books with a variety of popular solos I also utilize.  Method books are necessary for skill, but can get boring and repetitive for younger students.  Keeping things fresh and interesting is my main focus in teaching. The duo recently placed second in the Best Composers Series for Best Bartok Performance for their performance of Bartoks Romanian Folk Dances. Ms. Kaitlin H. is currently completing her masters degree in flute performance at The Hartt School under Janet Arms. She previously completed her undergraduate degree in flute performance with a minor in social media under Dr. Susanna Lowey and Janet Axelrod. I graduated from the University of Delaware in 2015 with two degrees, a Bachlor of Music in Music Education and a BM in Music Composition. For elementary students, I usually have them work out of Standard of Excellence books or Rubank Elementary method books and supplement them with fun popular music they enjoy to play. For middle school and high school students, I encourage them to work on appropriate solos, scales, and duets we can play together. For adult students, I typically ask them about their musical goals and interests so that we can make a plan that they’re excited about! Read More

I have developed my own system and materials for introducing the fingerings and reading music in a methodical way. I write my own simple exercises and songs. I use the Wagner book and a duet book, and appropriate solos depending on the interests of the student. I customize the lessons and go where the student's needs and interests are. Popular songs can be good as solos, and some studnets really enjoy playing Handel, Telemann, and Bach. Read More

I began teaching lessons after my freshman year of college in 2010 and have had students consistently since. I have worked with students from the very beginning stages to those at the college level. My students have successfully auditioned for CMEA festivals (Connecticut Music Educators Association) and NYSSMA festivals (New York State School Music Association). I believe that students learn in different ways. Due to this, my ability to easily relate to students and understand how they learn is one of my greatest assets. Read More
