For beginning students, I start with the Essential Elements book. If the student has already taken lessons or is in their school band/orchestra, I encourage moving onto the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced method books depending on ability. Once a student has proven that they are able to handle it, I will start on solo repertoire. Particularly for college-bound musicians who wish to major in music, the majority of their lessons will be based on preparing solo literature for All District or college auditions. Read More

I have just relocated (04/18) to the Hickory, NC area and I'm looking for some new students to get started in the area. I have over 40 years in the music business performing, teaching, recording, composing. I can teach most types and styles of music and I specialize in improvisation. I love to see people learn, progress, and have as much fun playing music as I do. I came from the Colorado Springs, CO area. Read More

I believe that every single child has the ability to play a musical instrument and it is my goal to help as many children as I can realize that potential. However, not every child learns the same way or is motivated by the same things, so it is crucial that I am able to modify my teaching to reach every student. I like to set goals with students so that they are able to direct their own lessons and have something to work towards. Read More

In the past, I have used several different band methods and generally like to first use the book that the students' school district is using. As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. For the younger student, additionally, I like to work with improvising and making up his/her own songs, so that they enjoy and develop a sense of accomplishment in composing their own music. My teaching experience dates back to my high school days when I began teaching private lessons part time, and started a program for underprivileged students to have group lessons and perform throughout the community. I also have five years of experience teaching middle school and high school music in public schools. I love to see my students enter various competitions and perform in recitals. I am always looking to work with new students of all ages, regardless of past musical experience! Read More

For beginner students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, since it is commonly the book used in middle school bands. From there, I transition the student to solo repertoire by finding/transcribing music that the student enjoys before introducing appropriate more formal solo repertoire. I also begin teaching students basic music theory and slowly start to introduce more advanced techniques, such as vibrato and double-tonguing. It is also important for me to ask students about their goals and interests when structuring their lesson curriculum! Read More
