My first love is jazz, and as such I have a strong love of improvisation and aural skills, which I believe are relevant in all forms of music (even Bach improvised!). Once some fundamental skills and theoretical knowledge is ascertained, I like to build on more advanced musical skills like learning songs by ear, being able to identify certain common chord progressions, helpful tips for memorizing pieces, and learning to personalize music through expressive techniques and improvisational application where appropriate. For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. My ultimate goal is to help students develop a love for playing and being around music. The last thing I want is a discouraged student or one that has become bored with music. Therefore, I will set realistic goals for my students so that they are not overwhelmed, but at the same time are constantly engaged and challenged by the material. I started playing flute when I was 7 years old and I've dedicate my life to music since then. I graduated from the Hight Conservatory of Music in Oviedo (Spain) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Flute Performance, and from the International University of La Rioja (Spain) with a Master's Degree in Education. I've been working as a music teacher for the last 10 years, teaching flute, music theory and orchestra, to students all ages, at the same time that I've continued performing with different orchestras and bands, as the main flutist or soloist. In May of 2014 I graduated with my Master's degree in flute performance from the Yale School of Music. My musical passion is chamber music, and new music. This focus has led me to found a professional woodwind quintet, Sounding Board, and to pursue my second Master's degree in a specialized contemporary performance program at Manhattan School of Music.
