Everyone has the capacity to be a musician...therefore, I teach students of all ages and include all cultures (all styles and musical genres). No one is a 'beginner' when it comes to recognizing great music, so I strive to create musicians who can reach their own goals...thus, building independence is the key: My job is done when my students can do what I do without needing me! For more experienced students, I assess your present skills upon our first lesson via a variety of repertoire so as to 'diagnose' what areas you need improvement on musically speaking. Read More

My name is Jessica. I have been playing flute for 23 yrs and enjoy teaching beginner flute 6-8th grade and volunteer flute lessons for a local middle schools. I have been playing piccolo since freshman year of college. I work from home for apple and practice my flute about 10+ hours a week. When I start with a beginning student, I always ask the student to bring any music they are current learning, want to learn and a challenge piece to look forward to that way we are able to build a road map of the students learning and what skills we need to achieve to learn that acquired piece. I've very goal oriented. I want to have a direction to steer the student towards. No point in teaching reggae parts to somebody who wants to play classical music. Most of it is a little bit of good sense, a little bit of exploring some different kinds of music and a little bit of practice. Read More

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
I don’t think this is going to be the same answer for any two students. However, speaking generally, the hardest things to master are the things that you tell yourself you can’t do. It truly is about your mindset.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
Other than using some specific books as tools (Arban, Bordogni, Edwards), I focus on building skills more than working through specific books. We work on building aural skills (being able to hear notes and produce those on your instrument), tone, sightreading, musicality. We work on skills that will set each student up for success in whatever they pursue.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A normal practice session is goal oriented. I set goals for myself at the beginning of the session. For me personally, I don’t do well with long sessions, so I do multiple short sessions a day. I do not practice a particular amount of time, but rather, I practice in order to reach specific goals for a performance or for skill building.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
I am actually the only musician in my immediate family! My mom tried band in school and left after a year. My family really supports me in my musical endeavors despite not being experienced themselves.
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I think being a musician has just always been who I am. I think no matter what I’m doing for other jobs, teaching and performing will always be a defining factor of “Ashley.”
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
When I am not teaching, I am working as a pet sitter/office manager! I have a huge passion for working with animals as well and working with rescue pets specifically!
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I really enjoy solo repertoire written after 2012. I love how composers now push past the limits of traditional classical music. I also really enjoy playing with show choirs!
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have two degrees in music: one in music education K-12, and the other in music performance. I have always been passionate about both performance and teaching, and have never felt like one truly fit me. I feel like each degree has helped me become a well rounded musician and teacher.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I have been lucky to perform several pieces that I have dreamed of. Some of my favorites are 6.35 by Steven Verhelst for trombone ensemble and Serenata by Anthony DiLorenzo for solo repertoire.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
I have had students accepted into college music programs, and have earned music scholarships. I have also had students who have earned placements in All Region, Area, youth orchestras, and received 1s and 1+s in Solo and Ensemble competitions, both in Texas and Arkansas.
