In 2012, I graduated from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University with my Master's of Music degree in Conducting, and in 2008 I graduated from the Western Carolina University Honors College with my Bachelor's degree in Music Education. In the past, I have used several different band methods and generally like to first use the book that the students' school district is using. As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. For the younger student, additionally, I like to work with improvising and making up his/her own songs, so that they enjoy and develop a sense of accomplishment in composing their own music. It is my goal to customize the lesson experience for every student that I teach. Most beginners benefit from a method book, such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, which is a good starting place for most students. As students progress on their instrument, I choose the method books and solos that will best help them develop their talents as well as keep them engaged in the material. During my years on the flute, I have used a wide variety of methods that I have found successful for different techniques, so I can effectively select what material will help each student become successful. I then attended Housatonic College where the Costanzo brothers, Sonny and Sam, headed the music department. Sonny is a renowned trombonist in the New York City area who has played over the years with Clark Terry’s big band and now leads his own.             One of the highlights into my ventures with jazz was to study under John Mehegan, noted scholar, author and educator. John set into motion the study of jazz theory and improvisation with his four book series on the subject, which is still highly recognized today. Read More
