After graduating from college I joined the Peace Corps. I spent 2 years in Tehran, Iran playing in the Tehran Symphony Orchestra. I returned to the U.S. and went back to school to get my Masters degree. I worked as a music teacher in the Bronx, N.Y. for several years. After that I worked at an electronic music studio in Hawthorne, N.Y. For older beginners, I make sure I work on their scale patterns and so forth, but I play to this particular student's personal interests and what they prefer to do. As a student gets more mature musically, I show them etudes, official flute repertoire, and eventually introduce them to harder technique practices, such as 17 Grande Exercises for Flute by Taffanel and Gaubert. In lessons with beginner and intermediate students, I utilize the Rubank method books. Once a student has mastered those, we move onto etude books. I assign scale exercises and repertoire to all of my students, and I like to introduce beginner music theory when appropriate. My students practice duets and sight-reading in lessons with me, and this combination of materials gives the student the most comprehensive learning experience.
