I normally use the Standard of Excellence method books for most of my students; however, I am open minded to adjusting to each individual student's musical needs, whether it be Jazz, Classical, or whatever style music the student is focusing on. It could be something as simple as next week I want to play the single note that has been giving me trouble, or as advanced as I want to be able to play this solo piece from memory in three months. I will always praise them when they make improvements, no matter how small, but I will still make sure they know what it is they have to work on without reprimanding them.
