For beginning students, I like to focus and builds traditional "executive skills" such as embochure, posture, hand position, ear training, and articulation. Once the student has a grasp of fundamentals, I introduce scales and solo repertoire appropriate to their development. For advanced students, I focus on building upon their knowledge of scales, etude methods, harmony and chordal progressions, as well as solo repertoire--while incorporating elements of improvisation, extended techniques, and electronics. I play duets with each of my students regularly! Read More

I began teaching while in college and have now been teaching for 11 years. My students have ranged in age from 3-60. Since getting my Suzuki Flute certification in 2008, I have found the Suzuki method a great way to start young beginners. In addition to giving private lessons, I taught group flute classes for 3 years with the Harmony Program My students are encouraged to participate in ensembles, competitions and recitals as having such goals is a great motivation for practice and musical growth. I have been teaching for more than four years, and each time I encounter a student, I encounter new challenges. I am somewhat stern, yet kind, and I can easily make students laugh. I also try to find out more about the subject that each student likes so that we can both incorporate a bit of fun into the lesson. My sense of humor has come in handy more that once when I find that a student is struggling. Read More

I always begin a lesson with having the student play a song/piece of their choice, so that they can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin and in the lesson space. For wind instruments, long tones and scales will occur at the beginning of the lesson, and will be followed by study of an etude and/or piece of repertoire. I will ask the student to sing through the piece, so that the student can make a connection with their own voice and with the music, followed by the student reading through the piece with their instrument. The first thing I like to establish with my students is a solid practice routine. There is no formula that works perfectly for everyone, but I do have a very good system which can easily be altered to fit each students individual needs. The next step is to set realistic goals. When students have a clear vision of what they are working towards, it is much easier to stay motivated and on track to achieving those goals. Read More
