Hello, I am currently finishing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Saxophone performance at the University of North Texas and am a teaching fellow there instructing undergraduate saxophone majors. I was originally accepted as a multiple woodwind major there as I have played flute and clarinet on cruise ships and jazz gigs as well as flute and clarinet classical works. I have worked with high school students and middle school students and find it rewarding to see them grow and progress into better musicians. I have enjoyed finding ways to keep my students motivated and wanting to come back and pursue their talent that they can spread with the world. It is not necessary, however, to learn chords or grooves specifically from a book for these instruments. Depending on the desired style, there may not be much use of notated music, guitar tabliture, etc. But as already stated, this does not excuse a good foundation in reading music and understanding music theory. For more advanced players (who would most likely be percussionists if working with me, though I am willing to work with any instrument at a more advanced level), we would work out of books I and the student(s) find fitting for their skill level.
