This helps ensure that the student can thrive musically and in life. Also I do a lot of "visualizing" while teaching my students. Often, if they are struggling, I'll tell them to say something like, "I can do it" aloud a few times. I also have them close their eyes and really listen to me playing so they can visualize what it's like to play the chord or song before they even start to actually play. Read More

I'm a passionate and dedicated music instructor with 10 years teaching and 15 years playing experience. I have toured extensively throughout Australia, the United States and Canada as a performing musician and songwriter in multiple acts, and have recorded in top studios in all 3 cities. I am degree educated in popular music and performance, and thoroughly enjoy bringing that wealth of musical knowledge and experience to every lesson I give. I can teach in students homes, or alternatively I enjoy teaching in my own Hollywood apartment studio. Read More

Studying music and a specific instrument is not a straight line. There are multiple lines that cross and support each other's continuation. As mentioned previously, "Theory, Application and Technique" sums it up. We can't focus on everything all at once, so we have to prioritize what makes sense to emphasize now so that it will help us prioritize something else later. We set tangible goals when focusing on technique ("play A major scale in 8th notes at 120 bpm, for example), and can do this with music theory to an extent as well ("write out the notes of the B minor scale"). I teach kids with Frederick Noad's Guitar Solo Playing and also I adopt the guitar curriculum created by Austin Classical Guitar. Both methods provide several pieces that the kid plays with the teacher. In this way, while the kids play simple notes/lines and start developing some skills (musical and technical), they are making beautiful music together with the teacher or other students. I worked as a teacher assistant using the Austin Guitar Curriculum at Adams Elementary School (St Louis), and the results were great. Read More

I am teacher who works to inspire students to really go for it, and use the guitar and bass to express themselves! I approach the music from the students desires and favorite music so that always sustains your passion and interest, and makes and keeps learning and practicing fun. I like all kinds of rock, blues, and jazz, and love to teach songs, and song writing as well. My emphasis is on self expression and performance, and then reading, theory and technique. Read More

My methods are geared toward the individual. Oftentimes I might start with a methods book for a beginner, but supplement it with musical choices by the individual. In selecting these choices, I find ways to simplify the music so that the student is able to be able to play it. My method is also based on questions that the student might ask. So while we will have an approach that is organized and structured, I find that addressing seemingly unrelated musical questions, can actually be incorporated into the tasks at hand. Read More

Rewind to the year 1996. I was in a local music store looking at the bulletin board looking for a band/bandmates. One index card caught my attention in particular: "Looking for someone to teach my 15 year old son guitar, can pay $20.00 an hour." I took the card and raced home and called her. Turns out she lived next door! Turns out he could play a little bit, so during my stint w/ him we took songs apart, put them back together then played them. Read More
