To me, my most successful teaching has been with students who weren't necessarily the most talented, but who were the most enthusiastic about learning. I think with guitar methods, the pedagogy is not as linear as other instruments and there tends to be a jump in difficulty at about the two-year point. I encourage my students to play duets with me and their friends (if applicable) and participate in recitals.I also try to teach them basic music theory unless they object, and help them to understand music, learn more about the history of music, and related matters. With students that are full beginners, I like to start them out with some reading to show them how time is divided and how to identify notes on the staff. I've found that finding notes on the staff helps them learn the notes on the fretboard faster and easier. I use a book called Guitar Method Book 1 by Hal Leonard.
