As a k-12 certified music teacher I have taught music lessons privately and to ensembles. I have also taught in the classroom setting as a long term substitute band director. I am a woodwind specialist who has made a career out of performing in pit orchestras for Broadway musicals. I have performed at regional theaters in New York and Colorado and toured the United States and Canada. I also toured internationally with Disney's Beauty and the Beast where I went to Asia, Europe, The Middle East and Africa. Read More

While in college I experienced teaching from a different point of view as I assisted with tutoring fellow students in subjects like Ear Training, Theory, and Arranging. I find that the understanding of these music fundamentals creates a comfortable place like a home for a young musician to live in, and when they explore new and exciting sounds they leave the comfort of their "homes" and find things that end of defining their own sound and style. I have a great breadth and depth of experience with instrumental music education. Clarinet has been my primary performance instrument, but I have found over the years that the techniques that I use to teach clarinet are easily and successfully transferable to the other instruments that I teach. Besides the clarinet, I also teach saxophone, guitar, violin and piano throughout the Colorado Springs area. Of course the differences have to do with embouchere, fingerings (which are similar to the clarinet), and tone production. Read More

Because of these beliefs, I typically structure my own curriculum based on the student's skill level, interests, and goals. This will include my own printed materials and curricula. Generally, if students would like to learn classical, I will draw from the Royal Conservatory of Music Repertoire and Studies series. For other styles, I begin with tablature of your favorite songs. I can teach any player to read sheet music, and that would ideally be done with beginners as well - however, if this is not in your interests, we don't need to go there. Read More

I began teaching music at the age of 15, primarily guitar and piano lessons for beginners ages 7-14 in my hometown of Parker, CO. At 16 I began teaching my students basic music theory and intermediate instrumental instruction. I moved to Boston in 2012 to pursue an undergraduate degree in Songwriting from Berklee College of Music in Boston, still actively teaching throughout my curriculum. I have now taught over 200 students ages 4 to 64 a wide variety of music-related subjects, including: piano, guitar, bass, voice, music theory, D.A.W. and notation software, and contemporary songwriting. The type of material we can cover is very broad including scales, arpeggios, chords, chord construction, music theory, music reading, songwriting, learning songs, technique, etc... However it's very important to me to not teach material the student is uninterested in. Music is a language and every genre has its own language aside from music as a whole. For Example: If a student wants to learn how to play bluegrass I will not waste time teaching them Jazz oriented chord voicings, bebop phrasing, and other jazz oriented things. Read More

This will vary given the student's abilities and particular intentions for study. In general, I focus on five distinct areas of learning: technique, theoretical understanding, reading, intuitive playing/learning by ear, and performance. I like to keep each lesson fluid and organized, by maintaining structure within segments of study. Within these segments we may venture into something unanticipated, so long as the student expresses interest, readiness, and the ability to learn. Read More
