This requires two important aspects: development of technique/facility on one's instrument, and a sense of acheiving one's personal musical goals. I give a very good foundational approach to the learning experience. For example, I teach students how to find the notes on the guitar and the bass. From there on the guitar, I teach the open string chords. On the bass, I give fingering exercises and patterns to work on. With the chords, we look at simple songs to play.
