My goal is to inspire and invigorate my students with the gift of music. Scales and fingering/vocal exercises can become boring and tiresome especially for new and younger students. I find ways to make these more mundane parts of the lesson fun with games and veiled learning that keep students engaged. The first thing I do is find out where you already are. If you’re a beginner, we’ll get right into the basics and build from there. I like to use a book to supplement lessons but not as a main focus. If you’ve already been playing, I’ll usually try to find anything you may have missed along the way that I consider to be important. Because every student has different levels of experiences, aptitudes, and learning styles, my teaching methods vary based on each student. Generally, I work with the student to come up with a set of goals to work towards achieving. I teach the fundamentals of the instrument through learning songs that are of interest to the student. I generally use notation (sheet music) and will use instrument workbooks if it seems appropriate, while focusing mainly on developing the ear through listening. Read More
