For drumming and other instruments, starting with rudiments, learning how to read music, and playing scales are a great way to help a student build their technique and ear up. I've been teaching guitar and general music lessons since high school, where I would assist the music teacher in guitar and theory classes because of my advanced skill level. During my undergraduate studies in college, I put myself through school teaching private lessons in my home and at various music stores, churches, and performing arts schools, teaching around 200 students in 5 years. When I went back to school to get my masters degree, I was awarded an assistantship and taught music theory, music appreciation, jazz ensembles, and jazz improvisiation at the university, in addition to keeping a robust private guitar studio on the side. I like to focus my lessons based on the needs of the student. For beginener students (younger) I like to start out by playing and teaching them simple songs and melodies that will be easy to remeber and that will start to develop the fundamental knowledge of the guitar. From this point it will easier to learn more songs, creating a repetoire, and gradually move to more complicated music.
