Since graduating from Bethany College in 2010, I taught at a music studio in Wheeling, WV. Unfortunately, the studio closed down. Along with teaching there, I was giving private lessons from home and continue to do so. Each student is unique, and my teaching style changes to accommodate differences in age, musical background, musical interests, and goals. For younger students, I recommend a shorter 30 minute session, often broken into segments to retain focus with a child's attention span Each lesson begins with review of assigned material and explanation of the next assignment. My teaching style is the same for all of my students. We all learn at our own pace, it is important as a teacher to understand this and not push the student or give too much to work on in one lesson. The students skill grow stronger at a gradual and comfortable pace. Even if it is learning one scale a week that is progress! In all of my teaching, I combine my students' interests with the leading pedagogy practices in string education to develop the foundational skills of the instrument as well as a fondness for it. There are several method books that I use such as Suzuki, Schroeder's Cello Etudes, and Fiddler's Philharmonic, however, I tailor each lesson path to each student based on student interest as well as proper sequencing. After a student becomes comfortable with the basics, I begin diving into what styles or genres the student enjoys or favors. I will assess the students' needs simply by having a conversation first. Then ask some basic questions about what music style is appealing to them.
