Teaching for me works best on an individual level. Students work on different levels and languages concerning music, and you have to be able to adapt to them. Some people might understand everything from the get go, some students need graphic support, some student need to learn song to understand what they are doing. The important part of being an instructor is not the actual material to be taught but being able to clear the way for the student to learn and teach himself, as well as providing a direction towards understanding the instrument and music through the taste and necessities of each student. My pedagogy is based on the American jazz tradition and the teachings of Orff and Kodaly. I like to impart a holistic love of music in my students, without boring them with too much history or theory. However, it is my belief that theory and musical literacy will open doors to a greater level of fulfillment and understanding of music as a whole. The materials I use vary from student to student and from instrument to instrument, depending on each student's goals and progress. Read More

I have always had a great time playing music. Although I have worked very hard to become a musician, it never felt like work. I quickly learned as a teacher that if I could find a student's passion, the work of learning became almost effortless for the student as well. I offer one to one private lessons and small group classes. I customize the lessons to the goals of each student. Read More

I love to spend time with my students listening to some of their personal playlists and picking out songs from there for them to work on. Once I understand a student's taste, I love to show them other artists they may like and help expose them to new music. I try to balance the lessons with this type of work and more structured technical skill development. Music should be fun, exciting, and stimulating. Read More

In addition to partimento, I use other traditional methods. For beginner students who are children, I typically start with the James Bastien method. I like this method because it combines reading and playing the piano from the very beginning in a well-structured progression. Then it introduces important new concepts with fun (if charmingly old-fashioned) songs designed for teaching. As the student progresses, I like to use Hanon exercises for developing finger strength, and classical repertory for use in performance. Read More
