I am a passionate, motivated, and an experienced music instructor. I have been playing guitar and other various instruments since I was 11 - I'm currently in my mid thirties. I graduated in 2014 with an Associates degree in music from Sierra Community College, where my main focus was guitar and composition. Soon after, I transferred into Sacramento State's guitar program where I gained extensive knowledge of guitar scales, chords, and applicable techniques that make every day playing more enjoyable and professional. I've been playing music, teaching, and performing over a variety of ways across the bay area for over 12 years. I received a degree in Jazz Studies and Composition from Sonoma State University in 2006 and have been utilizing my degree as a creative artist and sharing my knowledge with students since 2002 where I grew up in the foothills sound of Yosemite National Park. I play Saxophone, Clarinet, and Flute, along with Piano and Guitar for deeper ways of relating music to my life. Read More

I have been playing the guitar for about 13 years and have been teaching for about 4 years. My teaching experience began in college as I taught private lessons to other students and even some faculty. Since I graduated school, I began working in a music production and recording studio where I teach music lessons and help artists produce and record their own music. I am a very patient instructor who likes to bring in all sorts of knowledge and fun into the classroom! Read More

I assess what the student's current strengths, weaknesses, and needs are. Every student will have a different approach in the lessons as everyone has different taste in music and different learning styles. I cater to the student's interests to make the lessons easy and interesting while making sure that the student is aware of the reason that they are understanding how the topic they are currently learning blends and builds into their overall playing and musicianship. For beginning students, I try to figure out what if any familiarity with the instrument or connected genres the student already has and plan to orient lessons around that. If they're absolute beginners with no specific interests yet, as is often the case with children, I focus on teaching fundamentals of the instrument's technique, music theory relevant to reading sheet music and understanding scales, keys, and time signatures. If it seems like it would help I'd move on to the Suzuki method or at least to simple songs and etudes. Read More

For beginning to intermediate guitar players, I would suggest learning some of the fundamentals and basics from Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Complete Edition - Books 1 2 and 3 (bound together in one volume). As the student develops a better understanding of music and a better ability to play it, I would then work on finding them a piece of music that challenges their knowledge and technique, yet also a piece of music that they would want to play, and that they would be passionate about learning. I always say that rhythm is more important than the notes. Play the right rhythm and the notes will come instead of playing every right note while sacrificing rhythm. I encourage students to make their mistakes loud, proud, and in rhythm so everyone has a better idea of what needs to be worked on most. I also emphasize isolating parts to practice and working backwards. Example: play the last two bars of the song until comfortable with it, now play the last 4 bars, last 6, last 8...etc., whole song.
