I began teaching private music lessons while I was working on my Bachelor of Music degree. I also was a teaching assistant for guitar classes at the university that I attended. After I graduated I continued to teach privately, at music stores and technical colleges including Lake Washington Technical College. I taught at Bellevue American Music for over twenty years. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method introducing them to simple single string melodies that aid in teaching them how to read in open position. Once the student has progressed and has a good foundation with the basics, I begin to incorporate more intricate rhythms and chords and eventually move them on to learning riffs and short songs that will help them meet their own individual goals. For students who have played an instrument prior to our lessons, I try and shape a curriculum entirely based upon the specific goals of the student, and I rarely use text books although I use a lot of exercises and educational material when appropriate.  I feel learning to play and transcribe songs and solos to increase a students self reliance and confidence is my most important job.  Most students come to me looking for structure so I try and provide a clear path to their goals. No single approach works with every student when teaching drums. There are simply too many styles and methods to choose from. But when working with beginners, I tend to focus mostly on developing a good internal sense of rhythm and good listening skills. Then if the student wishes, we may specialize in classical, jazz, rock, latin, or whatever style the student is interested in. There are SO MANY ways to start learning music, so I don't necessarily believe in forcing students to read sheet music of classic standards. I started out with chords and tabs in middle school and that has given me the ability to figure out most basic-intermediate songs by ear. I went on to learn to read sheet music in college and if reading music is something that interests the student, we will of course pursue that together. Read More

I began playing the xylophone at age 7, from 11-14 I studied the cello and played in my school's orchestra (receiving high remarks) and at age 14, my ears opened up to the sound of electric guitar in all its possibilities to make music. Since then, I am committed to the guitar and have not found an end to its possibilities.
