Growing up in the Los Angeles area I started playing piano at age 8, guitar at age 11 and was working professionally as a musician by age 13 in local rock and acoustic acts. As a teenager I played in local college big bands, studied classical guitar at California Institute of the Arts and was invited to study at UC Santa Barbara to develop my other musical love, composing. Throughout my young adult life I studied classical and studio guitar, piano and composition at California State University Northridge and Javanese and Balinese Gamelan music at UCLA and Cal Arts. But when working with beginners, I tend to focus mostly on developing a good internal sense of rhythm and good listening skills. I started teaching at Shoreline Community College in their musical theatre department, leading vocal warm-ups and giving 1-on-1 coaching lessons to actors in their musicals while performing there myself. One of the greatest honors of my life was spending 2 years training under Juilliard-graduate Charles Enlow while at SCC. Since leaving college, I have worked on-and-off as a beginner-intermediate voice coach and piano/guitar teacher around the greater Seattle area. Guitar: For beginners who are kids, I usually start with the FJH Beginner Guitar Method, while also implementing fun melodies they know that can be played on single strings. Once the student has progressed a bit, we will work in chords, more advanced rhythms, and songs appropriate for a recital. For older beginners, I usually start with Hal Leonard's Complete Guitar Method, while again finding songs that match their musical taste and working towards their specific goals (i.e., I really want to start a punk band with my friends next summer, or I'd love to play this Taylor Swift song at the school talent show).
