My method/my style is as mentioned above: My focus is always on the individual student, their music interests and goals AND having a BLAST! My "style" is centered around enjoyment and realistic accomplishments, so the atmosphere is REWARDING! I do begin with foundational skills, music theory that is applicable to the knowledge level of my students, and technique building. However, I want my students to start to play songs as soon as possible and we only work on songs that THEY choose - I do not force students to learn songs that I select or songs that a book tells them to. My methods revolve wholly and completely around my students wants and needs. Generally for beginner students I will start by going over the basics, a small amount of essential music theory, how to read tabs and chord diagrams, and the different components and notes on a guitar or bass, before moving onto the fun part Ive found students tend to want to practice and play more when they are learning songs they love the most. I have taught guitar, piano, and flute for 30 years. The most important part of teaching is helping students to feel proud of their accomplishments and to enjoy music. I like to show my student''s performances through texting videos to their families as well as live concerts and recitals. I enjoy performing regularly as well. I have also worked as a music therapist in many different settings with a variety of different populations. Read More

I believe that a degree of flexibility should always be present within the learning environment. I generally try to understand and establish mutual expectations to ensure that my students are getting the best education possible. I also believe firmly in many of the tried and true methods of musical instruction. This instruction generally includes learning topics such as music theory, improvisation, scale to chord relationships, rhythm, playing technique, composition strategies, pieces of interest, reading notation and/or tabs, and many other pertinent aspects of music. I've always believed that learning comes 50% from the teacher, and 50% from the student. I do teach through lesson books but I've always found that they're better used as a guide rather than the focus of every lesson. I like to give the students the freedom to learn what they want to learn. I've always been willing to go the extra mile for my students, not just show up every week and continue from page 20 to see how far we get in the lesson book. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Students are able to select their own music and share their interests with me. Read More
