For beginners, I have a multitude of etudes, simple songs, and exercises to encourage sight-reading, finger comfortability, and basic cognitive understanding of music fundamentals such as scales. For guitar, I usually begin with fun simple songs such as "What do we do with the Drunken Sailor" and a simple blues. For woodwind instruments, I'll typically begin with songs such as Hot Cross Buns, Mary Had a Little Lamb, or some holiday songs during the holiday season. Read More

After the first lesson, I will break up lessons into warmups (stretches and fretboard exercises), the study of repertoire (learning melodies and chords), and the relevant technique (scales, picking approaches, etc) for which the music calls. Time spent discussing theory will likely emerge from the teaching of the song, but can be approached with a variable level of depth - students less interested in theory will still come away from a lesson with some awareness of what's making the music work; students more interested in theory are welcomed to dig deeper - with the awareness that theory may function as a useful tool to understand a piece of music, or even generate new material, but that the end-goal, ultimately, is to produce a piece of music; not a theorem. My style is to create a stress-free environment. Making music is fun and fulfilling and I make sure the student gets to experience that for themselves. I am very flexible with my approach. If I notice a student hates to read music, then we will practice learning by ear, or vice versa. If I notice my student is writing his or her own songs, then I foster that by teaching composition. Most lessons will be fairly laid back with alot of talk and examples, but not so much of a focus on playing styles. I won't be practicing a song with you over and over again, top to bottom. That's your job at home. When you and I are together we'll be doing a bit of jamming, and alot of analyzing. We're going to learn notes, chords, keys, scales, modes, harmony, melody, improvisation & composition. Read More

I am a goal setter and overachiever so I like to work with the student to set goals that will not be discouraging. I believe that learning how to play an instrument/sing with others in an ensemble setting helps reinforce what we work on in the lesson. As a multi-instrumentalist, I enjoy finding songs we can eventually play together while implementing technique and structure. I’ve done everything from covers, to song writing, to singing operatic repertoire in 5 different languages. Read More

My teaching style depends on the student. The way I teach young children can be quite different than the way I teach adults. In general, I'm quite laid back. During the first lesson I usually assess a student's skill level and also ask about a student's music goals. Then I'll design a lesson plan with the student's goals in mind. Everyone is different and everyone learns at a different speed. Read More

I keep my lessons low pressure and laid back. This is a fun hobby for my students and I try to keep it that way! At the same time, I work with the student to set goals to keep them accountable and making progress. I don't make students perform in front of anybody else unless that is a goal of theirs to work towards. Depending on the student's level, having me playing along with them at times is also something I use to help the student feel more comfortable. Read More
