If a student comes in knowing absolutely nothing about music, I will start with teaching basic music theory. Extensive knowledge of music theory is not essential, but a basic grasp will make the learning process much smoother. From there - for stringed instruments - we'll move onto hand conditioning. For beginning students, I always start with technique and posture, as improper technique can be catastrophic to your playing down the line. From there we'll cover the basics, such as chord shapes, strumming patterns, and scales. On top of that, each student will receive a "riff of the week", a guitar riff from a song that is in line with their particular music tastes.
