I try to teach music as a form of language, much like Victor Wooten teaches. Since I learned formally (in school/lessons) and informally (by ear, self-taught and playing onstage), I can give students whichever method suits their goals, with as much or as little theory as they are comfortable with. My earliest teaching engagements date back as far as middle school, where I was a member of the Dueitt Middle School guitar club: an after school extracurricular program based upon mutual learning. This eventually led to my joining the Spring High School music club, while offering independently designed lesson plans to students after school and during summer.
