The student and I will begin to develop a relationship right away. Trust and communication are key. We'll see where the student stands in his or her current playing. They will usually play for a minute or so and talk out loud about their feelings on their playing. This will include thoughts like where he or she starts to get bored, gets stuck, wants to explore more, has trouble, etc. Read More

Setting realistic goals is definitely a good place to start. Also, I encourage transcribing music in small sections, and to always start slow and take deep breaths, as this will reduce the student's normal anxiety and has done wonders in my own playing as well. Using a rhythm reference like a metronome or a drum loop while practicing is also a must, at it helps develop the student's groove. Internalizing music by developing the student's ear is also a very important part of my teaching style as Is applicable in any genre (hear it before you play it!) Read More

One of my main methods which I find makes the whole process a lot more fun and enjoyable for the student is breaking down a song into easy to learn segments, then helping them piece the whole thing together whilst teaching them any relevant theory at the same time, so a student can see how that piece of music theory is implemented into something "musical" rather than just a scale played note for note for instance. For beginning and intermediate guitar students, I typically use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Complete Edition by Will Schmid and Greg Koch. This book will cover technique, music notation, theory, repertoire, fingerboard knowledge and music fundamentals. It works for children and adults. For beginning students who are learning classical guitar, I use the Aaron Shearer's method which includes detailed lessons on theory, form, fingering, technique, sight-reading, and etc. Nevertheless, I usually use many other books for guitar lessons since I always take into consideration the needs and goals of my students. Enthusiasm! Encouragement! Fun! And lots of patience. I'm an energetic and passionate teacher and my goal in teaching is to pass that energy and passion on to my students! I understand that setting realistic goals and moving at a comfortable pace are crucial steps to take in order for this to happen. I also like to provide historical context and break down the "why" behind songs we work on in terms of music theory and songwriting choices, so that students can truly get a grasp on the entirety of the work rather than simply memorizing notes. We will be working from lesson books specifically designed for you, and each weekly lesson will be documented in a notebook as a daily practice reference guide. Read More

Hi, I am a highly passionate and devoted instructor. Music has captivated my mind and imagination all of my life, so having the opportunity to teach an instrument, music theory, and talk about music is something I genuinely cherish. I graduated from the University of California, San Diego in June of 2023, and have been working as a guitar instructor for just about 3 years now. I have spent 11 years with the guitar, and even spent 6 years as part of an advanced choir before college. Read More
