I have taught guitar since high school. I have had a ranging experience from teaching middle schoolers, to high schoolers, to adults. With each student, I assess where they are with their knowledge of the instrument, as well as how far their passion for music goes. In high school, I simply taught the fundamentals of the guitar as I knew it, making sure that my students played guitar correctly. As I grew musically and in my teaching methods, I understood that mixing in songs that my students knew into their lessons actually boosted the desire to play, and also made my job more efficient in conveying the reasons for good fundamentals while allowing a student to enjoy playing guitar. I like the Hal Leonard Guitar Method series, for guitar. I also use scales, picks, fingerstyle methods, and backing tracks to help get the students up to speed on a song or a riff they'd like to learn. It's important to understand the background of music, so I tend to also teach students the structure of a 12-bar blues progression and relate it to songs of yesterday and today. For Jazz students I use The Real Book Vol. 1 For most students a fundamental part of understanding music and the instrument itself is music theory.
